Although your chimney system is designed to last, there are many factors that can contribute to a damaged fireplace and chimney. Failing to schedule preventative maintenance, burning the wrong type of fuel, and incorrectly installed and constructed parts can lead to fireplace and chimney damage. This damage will need attention as soon as possible, and especially before winter!

HeatShield® Cerfractory® is a hybrid formula of ceramic and refractory material created over 20 years ago. It withstands moisture, corrosive flue gases, and temperatures higher than 2900°F, is rated as “super duty” refractory mortar and is well within code regulations. In fact, HeatShield® Cerfractory® Sealant is a trusted system of chimney restoration throughout the industry.

HeatShield® Repairs

There are three main systems of repair for which your chimney sweep may utilize HeatShield®. A simple application of this sealant in one appointment can save you an expensive repair.

  • Joint Repair System – A foam applicator is custom fit into your chimney and positioned below the damaged joint or gap. The HeatShield® Cerfractory® Flue Sealant mixture is added and the gaps are filled and smoothed as the applicator is pulled upward.
  • Resurfacing System – The foam applicator is custom fit and placed at the bottom of the flue. As the applicator is pulled upward, a “tie coat” is applied to the flue walls, which cleans and primes the surface. The applicator is brought up again with the HeatShield® Cerfractory® Flue Sealant mixture added, and the sealant is applied at 1/4 inch. When the job is completed the flue should be smooth, sealed, and air-tight.
  • CeCure® Sleeve Relining System – HeatShield® can be used with the CeCure® Sleeve Relining System. In much the way the flue was resurfaced using the “tie coat” and HeatShield® application, this repair system relines the chimney flue without needing to replace the entire liner. This process includes one coat of HeatShield® followed by a CeCure® Sleeve (thin stainless steel fabric), and finished with another coat of HeatShield® Cerfractory® Flue Sealant. This liner system is approved for all fuel types, and restores the liner without a costly replacement.
