When it comes to products and services, there is some benefit to having a standard by which to measure. Products are tested and rated for efficiency, strength, and safety. In addition, services can be harder to measure. In an ever-changing industry like fire safety, it became clear in the more than thirty years ago that there needed to be a standard for care, safety, and efficiency. For this reason the CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep® (CCS) credential was established in 1983. Afterwards, it became the industry standard thereafter.
CSIA Certified Chimney Sweeps® (CCS)
When a chimney sweep wishes to become CSIA certified, it’s more than merely paying dues and getting your name listed on a website.
To become CSIA certified, chimney sweeps must:
- Obtain and study study course materials.
- Attend a review in-person or online.
- Take and pass exam within one year consisting of 100 questions in 1 hour based on material.
- Take and pass a 90-minute open-book exam based on International Residential Code (2016).
- Sign Code of Ethics designed to protect consumers from possible scams.
Once a chimney sweep gains certification, he or she is subject to revocation for:
- Failure to adhere to the code of ethics.
- Failure to complete continued education credits.
- Not passing re-examination every three years.
- Failure to pay the annual re-certification fee for the first two years of membership.
